What is the difference between dsg and tiptronic

Tiptronic is still the old style transmission with a torque converter. I can't imagine how in any situation it shifts faster than a DSG. Even if it does by milliseconds, the fact that it is a torque converter based transmission you loose momentum whereas DSG just hands it off via the clutch to the next gear, virtually zero momentum loss.

DSG is the better transmission for performance. Tiptronic is owned by Porsche and licensed to VW and a few other manufacturers. Sandman GTI said:. Location NC. Not that it would matter really.

If I wanted to sprint why would the auto mode be faster then the manual? Location USA. DSG and Tiptronic transmissions are completely different. Tiptronic refers to being able to go from automatic to manual, that's it. It's VW way of describing the DSG being able to alos be used as a manual, nothing more, nothing less. Here's some further reading that goes in depth. Nomenclature is the same, but the transmissions are completely different.

A Tiptronic transmission is an automatic transmission that includes an option to switch out of automatic mode and upshift or downshift by using paddles behind the steering wheel or by using the gear lever itself. The name Tiptronic is a registered trademark that is owned by car manufacturer Porsche.

In Tiptronic, manual shifting is controlled through buttons with a plus sign for up-shifting and a minus sign for down-shifting. This is similar to what many sports cars use in order to give an authentic feel. While the first system was originally produced by Porsche, later systems have adopted similar technology, with the same name. It's different from a computer controlled manual transmission in that it does allow automatic shifting, uses a torque converter instead of a clutch, and the driver doesn't have full control over which gear the car is in.

The car will still upshift and downshift on its own in manual mode when certain parameters are reached - for example it won't let you exceed the engine's redline, and it will shift down into first when you come to a stop.

It is licensed to Audi and many other manufacturers. V6Pete said:. Thanks for your input. Is there a way of finding out from Audi what gearbox the car left with from the factory? Thanks again. Ring your local dealer with the reg and they will probably be able to help. I've seen some sellers incorrectly described cars as Tiptronic when they actually mean to say that it has the steering wheel paddles.

Gold Supporter. I can see why as its not that clear! HotboxDeluxe automatic. Tiptronic or "triptronic" or any other lingual mangling seems to be the common word used by many to describe any car with 2 pedals and "manual" gearchange abilities - heard the term applied to many brands from Porsche to BMW to Smart.

Like "hoover" means vacuum cleaner. S3Alex Rarely neutral Gold Supporter. Thanks guys, called my local dealer and they confirmed its dsg. A3 ownership here I come! American inventor Oscar H. Banker developed the concept and invented the first practical auto transmission.

The automobile giant General Motors introduced the first modern and mass-produced self-shifting gear called Hydramatic in The automatic transmission types is available in several versions depending on the make and model of a vehicle.

Mostly known as torque converter automatic, this is the standard type of automatic transmission to be found in most of the cars these days. Unlike a manual gearbox, it does not use a clutch to change gears. Instead, a hydraulic fluid coupling or a torque converter does this job. It connects to the Electronic Control Unit of the engine and allows for precise control of the vehicle. The impression has been changing though, thanks to some brilliant transmission models such as the ZF 8-speed, which you will find in many performance cars ranging from Jaguars to BMWs.

Also known as semi-automatic transmission SAT and several other names, this automatic transmission type utilizes a regular clutch and gear setup but automates the action by the use of sensors, actuators, processors, and pneumatics.

The cars featuring this transmission provide better performance on highways. They are not recommended for city driving because the engines feel jerky under hard acceleration. These gearboxes use either belts of pulleys, instead of steel gears found in traditional auto transmission, for changing the gears.

It allows seamless gear shifting with numerous range of ratios and facilitates the engine to spin at the maximum RPM speed. Two more types of CVT are there. The Hydrostatic CVT uses hydrostatic motors and variable-displacement pumps for transferring power to the engine. On the other hand, the Toroidal CVTs use discs and power rollers for this purpose.

The transmission allows the engine to operate at the maximum efficiency with seamless acceleration. It is good for fuel economy, and the repair and maintenance are not expensive. However, the engine creates much noise under acceleration and load. It is a hybrid of automatic and manual transmission. There is no torque converter in DCT.

You will use two separate shafts for gear changing, one for odd-numbered and another for even-numbered gears.
